In October 1938, the Nazis expelled thousands of polish Jews who were living in Germany. However, Poland did not accept them so the people were stranded in a no-man’s land. They were barely surviving under the harshest of conditions in a Polish camp. A 17 year old German born Polish Jew was in Paris at the time and learned his parents were in the camp. The young man became very angry and went to the German embassy in Paris with the intent of killing the German ambassador. But instead of killing the ambassador, he shot Ernst Von Rath, who was the Third Secretary to the ambassador. This was on November 7, 1938. The secretary died two day later on November 9.

The Nazis were waiting for an incident like this to justify an action against the Jews. Hitler gave his storm troopers a free hand against the Jews. When Von Rath died on November 9, they went on a rampage of terror and destruction. Approximately 250 synagogues were set on fire, 815 shops were destroyed, several hundred houses destroyed and 30,000 Jewish men rounded up and sent to concentration camps. This action against the Jews came to be known as Kristallnacht, meaning the “Night of Broken Glass” because the streets were filled with broken glass from the shops and synagogues the Nazis destroyed.

Now for many, this tragic event is only a footnote in the history books. But not so for those who lived through it. They will never forget and neither should we. People who don’t know history, will eventually repeat it. Those of us who are Christians need this understanding so we can stand with our Jewish friends and say, “Never Again.”

While the world is celebrating Halloween on October 31, God was celebrating something so much more important that few Christians know about.

You see, it was October 31, 1917 that the Australian Light Horseman made a miraculous charge across open desert and captured the wells at Beersheba. Why did this charge change the world?

In World War I the British and her allies were trying to liberate the Holy Land (then called Palestine), from the Turks and their German allies. The problem was they had to go through Beersheba to get to Jerusalem. The British and her allies had to go through Beersheba because the water wells were at Beersheba. In World War I the military still used horses and horses need water. But the Turks were in control of Beersheba and had built fortified trenches to protect the city.

Without Beersheba, the British and her allies could not liberate the Holy Land, Israel would not be reborn, Jerusalem would not be liberated and prophecy not fulfilled.

After failing several times to take Beersheba, British and Australian commanders determined that they would make one last effort to attack Beersheba with the Fourth Light Horse Brigade. Australian Lieutenant-General Harry Chauvel gave the command. It was just before dark with just enough daylight to make the charge. If the charge failed, the outcome of the war could have been completely different. Failure was not an option.

The Light Horseman were mounted infantry. They always rode their horses a certain distance and then dismounted to charge their enemy by foot. This is what the Germans and Turks expected them to do. But not this time.

I don’t want to give away the story except to say that the Light Horseman did a maneuver they had never done which so surprised the Germans and the Turks, the Light Horseman were able to capture the wells at Beersheba. During the battle, of the 800 Light Horseman in the charge, 31 were killed, 36 wounded and 70 horses died.

The result of the victory was that was that the way to Jerusalem was open for General Allenby to liberate Jerusalem in December and drive the Germans and Turks from the Holy Land. This also made possible the implementation of the Balfour Declaration on November 2 giving British support for the rights of the Jewish people to establish a state in their ancient homeland. This victory at Beersheba is as significant as the liberation of Jerusalem in the six day war in 1967. Without it, Bible prophecy would not be fulfilled. The victory is being re-enacted this year in Israel as the 100 year celebration of THE CHARGE THAT CHANGED THE WORLD.

THE BIG LIE OF MUSLIM TOLERANCE

Part 1

Another one of THE BIG LIES is that the Jews who lived under Muslim Arab rule before the birth of Israel had harmonious relations with the Arabs and were treated with dignity and tolerance. The implication is that if Israel would submit to Arab rule, the fighting would stop and Muslims, Jews, and Christian in the Middle East would live happily ever after.

Yasser Arafat once said, “We are not against Jews. On the contrary, we are all Semites and we have been living with each other in peace and fraternity, Muslims, Jews, and Christians for many centuries.” If you believe this fairy tale, I have some PLO resort property to sell you in the Gaza Strip.

Prior to Islam and the time of Mohammed, Jews and Arabs did live in relative peace with one another. However, when the Jews rejected Mohammed as a prophet, he turned against them with a vengeance as seen in his violent actions against the Jews and his words of hate in the Koran.

For example, in 627 CE, Arabs from Mecca fought Mohammed and his followers from Medina. Mohammed accused the Jews of plotting with the Meccans. After defeating the Meccans, Mohammed beheaded eight hundred Jewish men and made slaves of the women and children. This action became the model for all subsequent Islamic conquests. So much for peace and harmony.

An Arab leader who succeeded Mohammed was Omar. He produced a document called the “Omar Charter” in which he codified the conditions Jews were to live by under Islamic rule.     Here are some of the conditions of peace and fraternity the Jews enjoyed. Christians lived under similar conditions.

The Omar Charter

1. Jews were forbidden to touch the Koran.
2. Jews were required to wear distinctive clothing.
3. Jews were required to wear a yellow piece of cloth as a badge (blue for Christians).
4. Jews were not allowed to perform their religious practices in public.
5. Jews were not allowed to own a horse which was a sign of a nobleman.
6. Jews were required to bury their dead without grieving in public.
7. Jews were required to pay special taxes.
8. Jews were not allowed to defend themselves against a Muslim.
9. Jews were not allowed to testify against a Muslim.
10. Jews were forbidden to build new synagogues.
11. The houses and tombs of Jews were not allowed to be higher than those of the Muslims.
12. The graves of Jews had to be level so that anyone could walk over them.

Throughout the centuries, Jews and Christians living under Islamic rule suffered persecution and humiliation, the intensity of which was determined by the character of the particular Muslim ruler. Even under relevantly tolerant rule, Jews and Christians struggled to survive and lived in constant fear for their lives. They only flourished if their Muslim rulers had use for them. Nothing has changed because the nature of Islam is to “kill the infidel.”

In modern times, when Jordan illegally occupied East Jerusalem from 1948-1967, all Jewish residents were expelled and barred from the Western Wall. The Jewish quarter, including all fifty-eight synagogues, was destroyed or desecrated. This was done under the rule of King Hussein, the most moderate of Arab rulers. Think what would happen if the nations forced a Palestinian state on Israel.

THE BIG LIE OF THE “WEST BANK”

Part 2

At the end of World War I, the British made promises to the French, Ibn Ali Hussein (Arabs) and Jewish Zionists that were conflicting and impossible to keep. Britain would be granted the mandate to administer Palestine and Mesopotamia (Iraq). France would negotiate the mandate over Lebanon, Syria and the Golan.

Britain promised Ibn Ali Hussein Arab independence which the Arabs have achieved beyond their wildest dreams. Britain also promised the Jewish Zionists a homeland in Palestine which included both sides of the Jordan River.

Hussein had three sons, each of which were involved in the unfolding drama. For a brief time, Ali was king of pre-Saudi Arabia before being overthrown by Ibn Saud, the founder of Saudi Arabia and a leader of the radical Islamic group known as the Wahhabis. Their favorite son today is Osama be Laden.

Faisal represented his father at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 and made an agreement with the Zionist leadership represented by Chaim Weizmann. In the agreement, Faisal accepted the principles of the Balfour Declaration which called for a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

Unknown to the French, the British had promised Faisal they would appoint him as king of Syria. He was crowned as king but the French quickly forced him out in 1920.

To placate Faisal, the British offered to make him king of Iraq. But they had already told his brother, Abdullah, that he would be king of Iraq. Left without a kingdom, Abdullah made plans to attack the French in Syria and establish himself as king.

The British panicked and offered to make Abdullah the ruler of the British mandated area east of the Jordan River. But the British had already promised this land to the Jews. No matter the promise, in 1921 the British took the land of Palestine East of the Jordan River and created a separate territory called Transjordan, later Jordan. This was seventy-seven percent of the land promised to the Jews.

In 1947, the United Nations furthered partitioned the land allocated to the Jews into a Jewish and Arab state. In 1948, Jordan attacked the new State of Israel and illegally occupied the Old City of Jerusalem and the land area originally promised to the Jews by the world powers. Since this land area is west of the Jordan River, the Jordanians referred to it as the “West Bank.” This is the territory liberated by the Israelis in 1967.

From biblical times, the “West Bank” was called Judea and Samaria. It is the very heart of the land God gave to the Jews as an everlasting possession. It was the inheritance of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh.

This is where God appeared to the Patriarchs, where they are buried, where the Tabernacle was located, where David and Solomon ruled, and where the Temple stood. It was Judea and Samaria in the time of Jesus and throughout history.

The Lord calls this area the “Mountains of Israel” (Ezekiel 36). He says He will bring back the Jewish people to the Mountains of Israel.  He says His people will “take possession” of the Mountains of Israel (Ezekiel 36:12). These are the so-called “settlers.” They are not obstacles to peace. They are not occupying the mythical “West Bank.” They are taking possession of Judea and Samaria, the Mountains of Israel promised by the Almighty to the Jewish people.

The Myth of the “West Bank”

 Part 1

A mythical phrase that has become commonplace in the Arab-Israeli conflict is the phrase, “West Bank.” I call this a mythical phrase because it was invented by Jordan to describe the territory west of the Jordan River, a territory which Jordan illegally occupied.

When the news media refers to this area, they call it the “occupied West Bank.” Of course we understand these great reservoirs of truth to mean that it is occupied by Israel. But it was Jordan that illegally occupied the so-called “West Bank” until it was liberated by Israel in 1967. When and how did a land promised to the Jews become the “West Bank?”

On November 5, 1914, the British Government declared war on Turkey. They recruited an Arabian warlord by the name of Ibn Ali Hussein, to lead an Arab uprising against the Turks. Hussein was Sherif of Mecca and the only Arab leader to cooperate with the British during World War I.

Sir Henry McMahon, the British Ambassador to Egypt, promised Hussein Arab independence in return for his assistance. As is often the case with human agreements, some of the details of the agreement were broad and open to different interpretations.

A British officer, T.E. Lawrence provided British leadership, provisions and gold to encourage Hussein and his followers. While Hussein did declare an Arab revolt against Turkey, with British assistance through Lawrence, history gives conflicting claims about the extent and significance of this revolt.

T.E. Lawrence had a great public relations agent named Lowell Thomas. Thomas turned T.E. Lawrence into Lawrence of Arabia and made Hussein the leader of a great revolt. Later reports confirm that the Hollywood Lawrence of Arabia and the great Hussein revolt were myths in themselves.

In 1916, Sir Mark Sykes, representing the British, and Francios Georges Picot representing the French, drew up a first plan to partition the Turkish Empire. The plan was known as the Sykes-Picot Agreement. It was abandoned as others plans developed.

An important part of this plan was to protect British and French interest in pre-Israel Palestine. While this had been a neglected, desolate region from the time the Jews were dispersed in 135 CE, its location was of strategic interest to the British and French.

At this time, a change of government took place in Britain which would have monumental consequences. David Lloyd George became Prime Minister and Author James Balfour became Foreign Secretary. Both were Christian Zionist. On November 2, 1917, Britain issued the famous Balfour Declaration giving superpower support of the rights of the Jewish people to establish a homeland in Palestine. The Jews were promised land on both sides of the Jordan River.

At the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, the foundation was laid which led to Britain being granted the mandate to administer Palestine and Mesopotamia (renamed Iraq by the British). This was confirmed by the newly formed League of Nations at the San Remo Conference in 1920. France would be given the mandate to administer Lebanon, Syria, and the Golan Heights. This set the stage for conflict between Britain, France, Sherif Hussein and the Jews for control of Palestine and both banks of the Jordan River. MORE ABOUT THIS IN PART 2.

OCCUPIED EAST JERUSALEM

When the highly paid professionals at the “Fake News Networks” report the latest happenings in Israel, they invariably talk about “occupied Arab East Jerusalem.” They usually mean the Old City and its surroundings. The idea planted in our minds is that the Arabs have been living in East Jerusalem for centuries, but the Jews, who are recent arrivals, forced them from their homes. What are the facts?

As most of you know, we have had the great privilege to take tour groups to Israel for about thirty years. The most exciting part of the tour is when we walk into the Old City of Jerusalem. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the history, the people, and the spiritual connection to Jerusalem are an experience the people never forget. You cannot explain Jerusalem, you experience Jerusalem.

We share how the wonderfully exciting Old City is divided into four quarters. These are: 1) the Jewish Quarter, 2) the Arab Quarter, 3) the Armenian Quarter, and 4) the Christian Quarter. But it was not always so divided, nor has it ever been “occupied Arab territory.” How did THE BIG LIE OF OCCUPIED ARAB EAST JERUSALEM become a fact?”

As I have often explained, the Jewish people have had an unbroken presence in the land for 3,000 years. There is archeological evidence of their presence in Jerusalem since 438 CE. The only time they were not allowed in Jerusalem was under Byzantine rule (135-438 CE) and during the Crusades (1099-1187 CE). When the Crusades ended, the Jews returned to Jerusalem where they had lived as the majority population since the 1820’s.

Prior to the British Mandate from 1917 to 1948, the Old City was populated by various religious and ethnic groups. While they had a natural tendency to live next door to their own kind, and dominated their neighborhood, they also lived in different parts of the Old City, which was not divided as it is today.

In 1920, the British established the “mythical Arab quarter” of the Old City. At that time, the Jews were the majority population, followed by Christians, and then Arabs. There were so few Arabs living in the Old City, they did not need a separate quarter for themselves. There was a Jewish Quarter, a Christian Quarter, an Armenian Quarter, and a Mixed Quarter.

In 1914, seventy percent of the residents of the Mixed Quarter were Jews, not Arabs. The Arabs represented less than ten percent of the population of the Old City. The main street in the Mixed Quarter housed 22 synagogues, not mosques, two Jewish learning centers, the printing press for the Hebrew-language newspaper, and other normal institutions to support Jewish life.

The British expelled the Jews from the Mixed Quarter and renamed it the Arab Quarter. The Arab riots in the 1920’s forced the Jews to flee their homes. The pro-Arab British governing Jerusalem at that time kept the Jews from returning while assisting the Arabs to take possession of the deserted Jewish homes. The Arabs occupied East Jerusalem and the Jews, not the Arabs, became refugees.

When Jordan attacked Israel in 1948, the Jordanian army expelled the Jews from their homes in the Jewish Quarter, forbade Jews to enter the Old City, and destroyed any evidence of Jewish life. Jordan illegally occupied “Jewish East Jerusalem” from 1948 to 1967 at which time they attacked Israel. Israel defeated Jordan and Jerusalem was liberated from the occupying Arab power.

THE BIG LIE THAT JEWS STOLE ARAB LAND

Do you ever get tired of hearing THE BIG LIE that the Jews stole Palestinian land?   The Lord God of Israel made an everlasting covenant with the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give them the land with Jerusalem as their eternal, undivided capital. Yet, this sacred land grant, which is forever in time, is constantly referred to as “occupied Arab land.”

So what is the truth? Did the Jews steal Arab land when Israel was reborn? The information presented in this blog should help us answer this question. The facts presented are taken from Myths and Facts: A Guide to the Arab-Israeli Conflict published by American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise (AICE), From Time Immemorial by Joan Peters, published by Harper and Row, and other sources. Joan’s book is must reading for anyone wanting to know factual history about the land.

What about the land? Who owned what? Were the Arabs displaced? Were they forced from their homes? Even though the Arab population in the land has grown at a much greater rate than the Jewish population, Arabs have continued to propagate THE BIG LIE that Jews booted out the Arabs and stole their land.

What are the facts? From the beginning of World War I, part of the land the world calls Palestine was owned by absentee landlords who lived in Cairo, Damascus and Beirut. About eighty percent of the Palestinian Arabs were debt-ridden peasants, semi-nomads, and Bedouins.

In order to minimize conflict with the Arabs, Jews went out of their way to avoid purchasing land in areas where Arabs might be displaced. They sought land that was largely uncultivated, swampy, inexpensive and unoccupied.

David Ben-Gurion believed that the local Arabs should not be displaced. He actually called for the Jewish pioneers to help liberate the local Arabs from their oppressive landlords. His counsel was not to buy land from the “locals” unless they were vacating the land and that they should be paid a fair price.

Jewish pioneers made it a priority to buy unoccupied land or land owned by absentee landlords who were more than willing to sell their uninhabitable land at outrageously high prices. The pioneers did not buy cultivated land until after they had bought or settled on available unclaimed land. They found many Arabs eager to sell them the land at highly inflated prices. The Arabs thought the Jews were crazy to pay such a high price for “worthless” land. The Jews own the land because they bought it at premium prices.

John Hope Simpson made the following observation when he arrived in Palestine in May 1930: “They [the Jews] paid high prices for the land, and in addition they paid to certain of the occupants of those lands a considerable amount of money which they were not legally bound to pay.”

In order to render a just settlement for displaced Arabs, Lewis French conducted a survey in 1931 to determine who had lost their land. He then offered to help any dispossessed Arabs find new land. British officials received more than three thousand applications from locals who claimed to have lost their land to the Jews. After reviewing all the applications, the British determined that only twenty percent of the claims were justified as legitimate. The rest were not landless but were opportunist who tried to take advantage of the situation.

The BIG LIE of Al Quds – Part 3

This is a continuation of blogs on THE BIG LIE in its various expressions regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict. THE BIG LIE is the source of all the conflict in the Middle East. It is a serious threat to world peace and our way of life. We must educate ourselves and speak the truth in love.

In the previous two blogs, I explained the “THE BIG LIE of Al Quds,” which says that the Temple Mount is the third holiest site in Islam.  I pointed out that Jerusalem is mentioned over 800 times in the Bible but is not even mentioned one time in the Koran. In this BLOG I want to share with you some facts about the Mosque on the Temple Mount.

The Caliph Omar defeated the Byzantine Christians in 636 CE at the battle of the Yarmuk River. Two years later, Jerusalem surrendered to him. Until this time, Jerusalem had been outside the realm of Islam. This means that Muhammad never went to Jerusalem. Got it? Caliph Omar built a small house of prayer near the rock of the site of the Jewish Temple. The purpose was to show that Islam had replaced Judaism and Christianity as the last and truest divine revelation.

Later, the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik, whose capital was in Damascus, built the Dome of the Rock on the same site. This was in 692, 60 years after Muhammad’s death. Twenty years later in 712, his son, Caliph Al-Walid built the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. This was 80 years after Muhammad’s death.

Aqsa is Arabic for furthermost or remotest. Now here is where THE BIG LIE begins. As a way of establishing a legitimate claim of Islam over the Temple Mount, the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been identified as the furthermost or remotest Mosque spoken of in the Koran.

Reviewing earlier blogs on this subject we realize this is impossible because there was no Mosque on the Temple Mount when Muhammad lived. This is one of THE BIG LIE that has been constantly repeated to the point that most of the world believes it to be true.

Now this is really important to understand. Historians tell us that Abd al-Malik built the Dome of the Rock on the site to encourage Muslims worshippers in his territory to make pilgrimages to the Dome of the Rock rather than making pilgrimages outside of his territory to his rival Caliph in Mecca. Did you get that? It was purely for political purposes to keep his subjects under his control.

Abd al-Malik was eager to emphasize the independence and the triumph of the new religion over Christianity. In his mind, the capture of Jerusalem proved that Islam was superior to Judaism and Christianity, ideologically, and militarily.

Abd al-Malik put a lengthy description on the Dome of the Rock condemning Christianity. While the inscription contains many verses from the Koran, it does not mention the one about Muhammad’s night journey. Surely, he would have included that verse if he thought it referred to the Temple Mount.

Of course, Abd al-Malik knew that Muhammad had never been to Jerusalem, much less the Temple Mount. That is why he made no mention of THE BIG LIE of the Temple Mount being the third holiest site in Islam. It was clearly a late fabrication. Muslims had little or no interest in Jerusalem until the Jewish presence aroused them to jealousy.

Abd al-Malik believed he was building the Dome of the Rock on top of the site where Solomon had built the Jewish Temple. This is very interesting since Islamic leaders and the Palestinians deny there was ever a Jewish Temple on the Mount. To cover up their lie, they have been working to remove all evidence of a Jewish presence on the Mount. I personally have sifted through the rubble, along with our tour group, looking for “Temple Treasure.”

However consider the following quote from Haj Amin al-Husseini. Because he was from a prominent family in pre-Israel Palestine, the British, in 1921, appointed Al-Husseini Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. He was also President of the Supreme Muslim Council from 1922-1937. This man had the opportunity to be a peacemaker between the Arabs and the Jews. Unfortunately he chose the route of hate. He instigated the riots against the Jews and is the godfather of modern Palestinian terrorism. He was a great friend of Hitler and brought the Nazi “Final Solution to the Jewish Problem” to the Arab world and Palestine. He was an evil, hate-filled man who, not only murdered Jews, but Arabs who cooperated with Jews. Sound familiar?

In 1924, al-Husseini published a guide to the Temple Mount entitled, A Brief Guide to al-Haram al-Sharif. On page four, he makes the following comment regarding the Temple Mount, “The site is one of the oldest in the world. Its sanctity dates from the earliest (perhaps from pre-historic) times. Its identity with the sit of Solomon’s Temple is beyond dispute. This, too, is the spot, according the universal belief, on which ‘David built here an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offering and peace offering’” (2 Samuel 24:25).

The BIG LIE of Al Quds – Part 2

We are constantly told that Islam has historical claims to the Temple Mount. We are told that Jerusalem is sacred to the three great monotheistic faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. But is it really? Or is this another clever BIG LIE?      

In the previous blog, I began to expose THE BIG LIE that the Temple Mount is the “third holiest site” in Islam. This myth has been repeated so many times that even the tour guides in Israel believe it and pass THE BIG LIE on to tourist.

I pointed out that Jerusalem is mentioned over 800 times in the Bible but is not even mentioned one time in the Koran. One does not have to be a scholar or NASA rocket scientist to understand the significance of the love the Jewish people have for Jerusalem, as opposed to the complete historical indifference Islam has had for Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is the heart of Judaism but has had little or no importance to Muslims until recent times. They seem to be interested in Jerusalem and the Temple Mount only when the Jews are in control of them. So how is it that the Temple Mount has become the “third holiest site of Islam?”

The Koran, in Sura 17:1 states, “Glory be to Him who made His servant [Muhammad] go by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest [or remotest] Mosque.” All scholars agree that the Sacred Mosque is in Mecca. It’s the location of the farthest or remotest Mosque that has been the source of conflict.

Now this is really, really important! The earliest understanding from Muslim scholars was that the farthest Mosque referred to a Mosque towards Medina. It wasn’t until the seventh century that some Islamic leaders, for political reasons, identified it with Jerusalem. I will explain this in the next blog. The legend is that Muhammad, either literally, or in a dream/vision made a journey to heaven from Mecca with a stopover in Jerusalem.

The story is that Muhammad flew north on his horse, Burak, which had two wings and the face of a human. After stops at Mount Sinai and Bethlehem, they landed at the site of the Mosque in Jerusalem.

At this point, the story goes, heaven lowered a ladder to carry Muhammad to the Seventh Heaven where he was met by Abraham., Isaac, Joseph, Moses, and Jesus from whom Muhammad received their blessing to become the last prophet of A-l-l-a-h. Of course this idea was copied from Genesis 28:12 and John 1:51. In Islam, these Seventh Heaven residents were all Islamic prophets of A-l-l-a-h.

Muhammad then returned to Jerusalem by the ladder, at which time Burak flew him back to Mecca. Today, Muslims point to the footprint left when Muhammad leaped onto his back for the return trip to Mecca.

We learn that Muhammad’s second wife, Ayesha, revealed that on the night Muhammad was supposed to make this night flight, he was sleeping soundly by her side. In view of her testimony, Muhammad’s night flight has often been presented as a dream or vision rather than a literal event. Even so, there are still those who choose not to be confused with facts and present Muhammad’s flight as a literal happening.

Now all religions, including my own, have their legends. I am certainly not one to judge them. However, the problem with this one is that Muhammad died decades before a Mosque was built on the Temple Mount.

It is historically impossible that Jerusalem and the Temple Mount were the location of the farthest Mosque mentioned in the Koran. Muhammad died in 632 of the Common Era. This was six years before Jerusalem fell to the Arabs under Caliph Omar in 638. The Dome of the Rock was not built until 692, which was 60 years after Muhammad’s death. The Al-Aqsa Mosque was not built until 712, which is 80 years after Muhammad’s death. Do the math! Can you add and subtract?
